Wetland Construction and Stream Diversion/Restoration

Syracuse, New York ~

Wetland Construction – Elite was selected to team with a local consultant to complete the construction of a seven acre wetland on a previous industrial site. The first phase required diverting storm water run-off by excavating and removing a 36 inch diameter storm drain pipe and installing and earthen dam. The wetlands area was then dewatered by using (2) 2,000 GPM transfer pumps pumping approximately 10,000,000 gallons of water into an adjacent flume. Elite then excavated and placed 2,000 cubic yards of material to achieve the desired elevations and re-graded 325,000 square feet of the wetlands area to achieve the required grade. Once Elite achieved the required grade, 12,000 cubic yards of screened top soil was placed at a thickness of 12 inches and graded to allow for seeding and planting as called out in the specifications. The outfall of the wetlands was established by installing (3) sets of (2) 12 inch culvert pipes backfilled and compacted with structural fill with placed rip-rap at the ends to prevent soil erosion.

Stream Diversion & Restoration – Elite was contracted to re-grade the West Flume bottom and slopes and to remove silts to meet design grade. The West Flume carries storm water from several neighborhoods and industrial facilities and feeds a 4.6 mile lake. Elite had to divert approximately 1,300 linear feet of the flume to allow for the removal of 850 cubic yards of silts and unsuitable material. Elite placed approximately 450 cubic yards of fill to achieve sub-grade. Once sub-grade was established, Elite constructed an earthen dam to allow for the installation of 1,000 cubic yards of screened topsoil at a thickness of 6 inches and seeding which consisted of a conservation, wetland and rye mix. The disturbed areas were covered with coco mating to promote rapid development of vegetative growth and prevent erosion. Once the restoration was finished the earthen dam was removed and the normal flow of the Flume was restored. Elite’s attention to detail and timely completion made this project a complete success.
